The story behind the kit
Mapungubwe developed where the Limpopo and Shashe rivers meet. Its hilltop, terraces and surrounding settlements show how people used landscape, access and skilled planning to organise an important southern African centre.
Build the terrain in layers, position the settlement areas and compare routes between the valley and hill. The model is a learning interpretation rather than an archaeological reconstruction; use it to ask how elevation, movement, trade and social organisation connect.
What they'll learn
- Reading layered terrain
- How elevation affects access
- Settlement planning
