The story behind the kit
A mine headgear has one demanding job: move people and material safely between the surface and the shaft below. Its wheels, cables and supports must work together every time.
Build the tower, connect the winding drum and cage, then turn the crank to raise and lower the load. The finished model makes gear ratios, tension, mechanical advantage and structural safety visible in one working system inspired by South Africa’s deep-level mining engineering.
What they'll learn
- Pulleys and mechanical advantage
- Gear ratios
